Dorset Scenic Lookout Tower Trail| Length: | 1.5 km linear | | Rating: | moderate | | Duration: | 30 minutes | | Description: | The Dorset Scenic Lookout Tower is both a great attraction and historical landmark. It was built in 1967 on the site of an original fire tower where rangers once kept an eye out for potentially disastrous forest fires. The 100’ tall tower stands more than 350’ above the village of Dorset, a town steeped in history itself. The Tower Trail winds through a beautiful mixed forest from the base of the lookout hill to the top, and then back down again. Taking time at the top of the lookout hill is a must when doing this trail - climb the tower for a breathtaking view over miles and miles of spectacular landscape dotted with lakes. Complete your hike with a visit to the Dorset Heritage Museum – celebrating a grand re-opening on June 17th, 2006.
** Please note that the trail routing has changed for the 2006 hiking season (see map) – the left ‘arm’ of the trail has been closed. Respect the privacy of those living along the trail and keep only to the marked path.
Cautions: The incline is fairly steep in places, so sturdy boots and a reasonable level of fitness are recommended.
Cost: A $3 per car fee applies to access the trail from the top.
Directions: Take Hwy 35 to Dorset. You may access the trail from either the top of the lookout hill or from the bottom. The lower trailhead is located on Main St. adjacent the museum. The upper trailhead is accessible via Dorset Scenic Tower Rd., just north of Dorset off Hwy 35. The trailhead is adjacent the upper parking area and privies.
