Friday, October 16th, 2009

1. Old Growth Discovery Walk
This trek into the Clear Lake Conservation Reserve offers a rare opportunity to explore one of the few remaining stands of old growth white pine and hemlock left in Ontario. Along the way take in the panoramic views of Blackcat Lake and learn about the Clear Lake area’s logging history. Be sure to bring a lunch!

Time: 9:00 am to 2:00 pm and Saturday 11:30 am to 4:30 pm
Rating: 10km – Moderate, Dog Friendly
Location: From West Guilford, follow Kennisis Lake Rd. (County Rd. 7) to West Shore Rd. (approx. 14km). Turn left on West Shore Rd. and continue another 11km to Royal Mile Drive. Turn left on to Royal Mile drive and then make an immediate left into the cleared lot for parking.

2. Geohike
Discover the ancient world with consulting geologist Rick Keevil as you hike back to the birth of the Frost Centre”s rugged landscape. Hit the trails for some beautiful scenery and great examples of the forces that shaped the Canadian Shield. Good walking shoes or boots are necessary and recommended for this hike.

Location: Meet at the Frost Centre parking area, located on Hwy 35, 25km north of Carnarvon or 16km south of Dorset.

3. Millin’ Round the Mill with Your Pooch
Sponsored by The Minden Animal Hospital www.mindenanimalhospital.com
Join Stouffer Mill B&B owners Jessie and Don Pflug as they explore the trail system on their 136-acre wilderness property, including a towering pine forest and several beaver ponds. Top off the tour with Jessie’s famous homemade treats at the Pflug’s spectacular 12-sided hillside home that overlooks Halls Lake. Make sure to bring your pooch!

Location: Stouffer Mill B&B, located at the end of Stouffer Mill Rd. off Hwy 35, approx. 9 km north of Carnarvon.

4. Can You Dig It! ***
Learn about Haliburton County’s 130 years of mining heritage while you search for buried treasure! Dig for great crystals of apatite, titanite and other rock forming minerals at the Gibson’s Road Occurrence. Your guide, Michael Bainbridge, will tell you about the geological circumstances that have made this a great place to collect minerals as he shows you how you can find your own piece of this rich history - a billion years in the making! Participants will be required to sign a waiver. Registration will be limited to 15 people so please call ahead to book your spot at 705-489-4049 or email info@trailsandtours.com.

Rating: 300 metres - Easy, Family
Location: Meet Michael just past 1274 Gibsons Road at 1:00PM. From there you will convoy to the site. From Hwy 118 proceed north, turn left onto Gibsons Road, see white house on right hand side (road narrows-go straight). Park just past 1274. Please be sure, when you park, to allow for other vehicles by.

5. Walking on the Right Side of the Brain
“If you go down to the woods today you are in for a big surprise”. Discover the artistic wonders of the forest and the sculptures in a guided tour and experience with storyteller and artist Jim Blake in the Haliburton Sculpture Forest

Rating: 1km - Easy, Family
Location: From the Village of Haliburton, follow Bayshore Rd. (off Hwy 118 west) to the Haliburton Highlands Museum. Drive past the Museum, through the gates to the end of the road where parking is available. The hike starts here. You can also park at the Sir Sandford Fleming College Campus where the Family Blast Off BBQ will be taking place. Walk past the large kiosk towards the pioneer buildings and you will see where the trail begins.

6. Walk in the Universe*
Take a unique hike through the 14 billion year old story of the universe. Walk the Labyrinth as it spirals along the forest path telling the history of galaxies, stars, planets, earth, and all its species of life. Drummer and storyteller set the stage. A Walking Meditation, this is a journey on which to exercise imagination, engages intuition, and explores our origins. For adults and youth.

Location: Follow Hwy 118 to Stanhope Airport Rd (between Carnarvon and West Guilford). Take Airport Rd. to Barry Line, turn left and follow to Cameron Lane. The Gaia Centre is located at 1032 Cameron Lane.

7. When Darkness Falls***
Are you afraid of the dark? Discover the night time world using all your senses with a traditional night hike! Explore how sight takes a back seat to all other senses and have fun with activities geared to alter your perceptions of the dark world around us.

8. Gems Beneath Your Boots
Haliburton Rocks! This hike offers an once-in-a-lifetime tour of undisturbed deposits of fluorrichterite, orthoclase, tremolite, actinolite, apatite and quartz. John Etches, your geologist guide, and hosts Sandra & Mark Bramham, will interpret the geological history and reveal the unspoiled beauty of this extraordinary site. Find out how the rocks and minerals below can influence the plants and trees above. This hike includes trail and off-trail walking. This is a non-collecting tour, for viewing only - cameras welcome, hammers are not.

Time: 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and again at 1:00 pm to 4:00 p.m.
Rating: 4km- Moderate with a few steeper climbs
Location: Green Mantle Farm located at #1984 Essonville Line (County Rd 4), just 3 km from Wilberforce or 5 km from Hwy 118 east.

9. Geocaching ~ A Treasure Hunt with a High-Tech Twist
Geocaching is a family-oriented outdoor game that is becoming popular around the world! Learn the basics of operating a GPS receiver and how the game is played. Experience the challenge and thrill of finding caches while you hike beneath gigantic pines and take in the sights of beautiful Buckskin Lake. Hear the legend of Great Bear and find its treasures. Enjoy a midway break at a rustic log hunt camp built in the 1940’s. Grandparents bring your grandchildren. Kids bring your parents. This game is for all ages! The trail is even suitable for large-wheeled strollers with an able bodied pusher. GPS units will be provided but quantities are limited se feel free to bring your own. No experience needed. Just come and have fun in the Geocaching Capital of Canada!

Rating: 2km – Easy, Family
Location: Follow Hwy 118 east from Tory Hill to Monrock Lake Rd. (approx. 3 km from the junction of Hwy 118 & Loop Rd.) Turn right on to Monrock Lake Rd. and continue to the parking lot at the end of the road (another 3 km). Coordinates N 44 57.728 W 078 11.693 (for those already GPS savvy).

10. Trotting With The Mini’s***
Come take in the glorious fall views while escorting your very own mini horse! It’s sure to be a favorite, but you don’t have to be a kid to enjoy it! This hike will take place on Haliburton County’s Rail Trail.

Location: Haliburton County Rail Trail. Parking is available at the trail head kiosk, just past the hospital on the left hand side.

11. Circuit of 5 Viewpoints
This is a trail that never ceases to impress from the moment you leave the trailhead. Hikers ascend a gentle rise along the stony backbone of a classic Canadian Shield ridge, a route designed for both scenic value and minimal environmental impact. Each viewpoint is situated on a different dramatic cliff that overlooks rugged valleys, placid rivers, marsh meadows, or scenic distant lakes. It is ideal for those who want to take in the full glory of autumn’s vivid colours! Proper hiking boots/shoes are a must.

Rating: 5km – Moderate to Challenging
Location: Follow Hwy 35 north of Carnarvon to Little Hawk Lake Rd. (County Rd. 13) at Halls Lake. Continue along Little Hawk Lake Rd. through some spectacular granite ridges, cross the one-lane bridge over the Kennisis River and veer left at the Y. You will find the parking lot and trailhead on your left.

13. Follow My Steps Fitness Walk
Add variety to the way you walk and get in shape. It’s that easy! While travelling around Head Lake Trail, you will learn how to incorporate simple “steps” into your everyday walking routine to increase your level of challenge and fitness. Please wear comfortable and appropriate clothing and shoes.

Location: Meet at the Head Lake Trail kiosk next to the town docks in the Village of Haliburton.



14. Photo Hunt**
“A Quest for Expressions Time Frozen” Your afternoon will begin with a tour of the RD Lawrence Centre and a short discussion of what Photo Hunting is all about. Next you will venture out into the museum grounds and explore the Labyrinth and practice your newly learnt skills. Once you have practised your skills the group will then travel to the Snowden Park Trail for the very exciting Photo Hunt and hike. Be prepared to capture truly unique pictures as Snowden Park boasts of some excellent examples of wetlands in various stops along the way. Be sure to wear appropriate footwear.

Rating: 2.9km – Easy, Family Friendly and Wheelchair Accessible
Location: Meet your hike leaders in the RD Lawrence Place, beside the Minden Cultural Centre located at #176 Bobcaygen Rd., just 300 metres beyond downtown Minden. Then travel by car to Snowden Park located 0.3km south of the junction of County Road 1 and South Lake Road.

16. Open Stage – A Celebration of live Music
After an invigorating day of hiking join the Haliburton County Folk Society for an evening of live music featuring local musicians and special guests. Come to play or listen. All ages welcome. 17. High Falls Hike & Ride
A hike with a twist. Begin on horseback and ride to the start of the hiking trail, then hike up to view the scenic High Falls, return to the horses and ride back to base camp. Helmets are provided. $50.00/person & pre-registration is required. Rating: 4km horseback ride & 2 km hike - Easy, Family
Location: South Algonquin Trails located on Elephant Lake Rd. (County Rd. 10), approx. 12km from Harcourt.

18. High Falls Hike
The scent of fall will be magical as you hike along a trail that leads to Algonquin Park's "High Falls" on the York River, for many years this river was used as a major waterway. Algonquin tribes used it while retreating from the invading Iroquois. Fur Traders used it as a part of a transport route from Georgian Bay to the Ottawa River and lumber companies used it to transport their logs. Sturdy footwear for this hike is a must.

Location: From Harcourt, follow Elephant Lake Rd. (County Rd. 10) approx. 9km to the High Falls Trail kiosk. This hike will meet up with the High Falls Hike & Ride participants.

21. Lochlin Esker Hike
In a diverse area of woods and wetlands, the varied vegetation that occurs in marsh, fen, spruce bog, and forest is clearly evident; and rising above it all is an ancient glacial riverbed known as an esker. Rising as much as 70' above the adjacent wetlands, the esker provides excellent viewing and walking. Serpentine in profile, this esker is a historical footprint of times past.

Rating: 4km - Moderate, Family
Location: From Haliburton, follow Gelert Rd. (County Rd. 1) to Lochlin (approx 15km). Turn right onto Lochlin Rd. and continue another 2 km to Warder Rd. Meet at #1126 Warder Rd. where there is ample parking. From Minden: Follow South Lake Rd. (County Rd. 16) to Gelert Rd. Turn left and continue another 5km to Lochlin Rd. Turn left again onto Lochlin Rd. and follow the above directions.
